Streak Your Way Towards Wellness

“Streaking” has recently become popularized among runners, not because they are running in the nude but because they are aiming to run for as many consecutive days in a row. This concept is readily adaptable to all aspects of our wellness – choose a wellness goal and challenge yourself to action – create your own streak.

March is Nutrition month. Now many of us know what health eating looks like and what we “should” be putting on our plates or in our lunches. However, life often gets in the way and different choices are made. Trying to make too many changes at once can be overwhelming. How about picking 1 or 2 healthy nutrition behaviors and then aim to practice them for as many days in a row as you can? For example, “I am going to drink 4 large glasses of water daily…” You can also challenge friends or co-workers to see who can make the longest streak.

March 20th was the first day of Spring, and I am sure all of us are looking forward to sunshine & melting snow & ice so we can get outdoors more readily. This is a great time to get more active and create an exercise streak. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with family & friends, and enjoy some fresh air. Choosing something that you enjoy & motivates you is crucial.

Things like the pandemic & the war in Ukraine add much stress to already stressful, busy lives. This can lead to feelings of hopelessness & helplessness. It is important to practice self-care in order that we can cope. Self-care looks different for each person but setting time aside each day to do something positive for yourself can help you be able to bounce back from everyday stressors. Make this a streak challenge – purposefully set aside a few minutes each day to engage in something that makes you feel good.

Whichever streak you choose, be accountable and track your streak. If for some reason, you miss a day of your streak it does not mean that you failed. Do the Oilers give up on their season if they lose & break a winning streak? No & you should not give up either. Reflect on why you missed & start fresh tomorrow.

So pick a wellness behavior today that you want to work on & get started.

Happy Spring & Happy Streaking
